Two weeks ago, I headed west to a League of Women Voters Membership and Leadership Development (MLD) program training in Bozeman, Montana. When I landed, I thought that it might be hard to focus on the MLD training when surrounded by such amazing views of the mountains. I imagined that it would be difficult for anyone to get as excited about a weekend of trainings as I was to be in such a beautiful part of the country.
Once we got started though, the desire to grow a stronger, more vibrant League for the sake of our democracy was evident in every League member there, and it made the atmosphere inside the training just as exciting as the views outside.
Leaders from the League of Women Voters of Montana and local Leagues in Billings, Helena, Missoula, the Bozeman Area came together to discuss new techniques for increasing their membership, community impact, and visibility; all with the goal of strengthening democracy in Montana. It was a lot to cover in two short days, but as we dove into the materials, it became increasingly clear that the League of Women Voters in Montana -- at both the state and local levels -- is up to any challenge and excited for the opportunity to make a difference.
Members of the League of Women Voters in Montana are energized and looking towards the future. They are prepared to fight a legislative referendum eliminating same day voter registration, an effort that would severely restrict the voting rights of so many in their communities.
Like their counterparts across the country, League members in Montana are passionately committed to their communities and their democracy. Those who attended the training worked hard all day and even stayed on well into the evening strategizing how best to protect voting rights in their state. With the new tools that they have learned through the MLD program and their passion for the League, I am convinced that democracy in Montana is being well defended.
