The League joined coalition partners in requesting a meeting with Speaker of the House, John Boehner, to discuss the Office of Congressional Ethics.
November 19, 2012
The Honorable John Boehner
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Speaker Boehner:
We are writing to request a meeting with you in the next few weeks to discuss the future of the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), including the appointment of new Board members.
In our view, the OCE has played an important role in increasing public confidence in the congressional ethics process by acting repeatedly in a professional, bipartisan manner. It also has helped solve at least part of the “black hole” problem that has marred the ethics enforcement process.
Yet, as the reports from the investigation into the activities of Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) reveal, serious problems remain with the House ethics process.
We would like to discuss with you the status of the OCE for the 113th Congress, your plans for the appointment of new Board members, and also hear your thoughts on the current ethics process.
Please contact Meredith McGehee of the Campaign Legal Center (firstname.lastname@example.org, 202-669-9919) to follow up.
Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to hearing from you.
