Every time I remember that this is National Volunteer Week, I break into a smile. I am lucky to come to work every day to support women & men around the country who are dedicating their free time to helping voters participate in our democracy.
I’ve been a proud League of Women Voters staffer and a local volunteer since 2006. In my work I’ve had the opportunity to work with hundreds of inspiring League volunteers and seen large-scale voter empowerment efforts come to life.
Each state has focused some of their energy on voting rights and elections – 2230 bills relating to elections, both good and bad, have been introduced in state legislatures across the country since January.
Voting rights have been under attack in state legislatures across the country for more than a decade and there are no signs of it letting up in 2013. Indeed 2013 could be a year that sets back voting rights more than all of the attacks of the past decade combined.
