A project of the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS) dedicated to advancing empirically based models for choosing, evaluating, and retaining judges that preserve impartiality and accountability, the "Quality Judges Initiative" convened a group of leaders from a wide range of fields and political backgrounds to develop a set of principles to ensure quality state court judges. Elisabeth MacNamara, President of the League of Women Voters of the United States, participated in the roundtable in Denver on February 10, 2012. The next steps are to draft a report on what the agreed-upon desired attributes for court systems and individual judges are, and what principles should be followed in selecting judges to attain court systems and judges with those attributes.
