Tomorrow night, President Obama will deliver his third State of the Union address to Congress and the nation. There are many important issues for the President to discuss, most importantly the state of our economy. We, like many of you, are keenly interested in what he will say.
According to some news reports, the President may propose political changes in a number of areas, including the financing of political campaigns.
We hope so and we hope he addresses his remarks to grappling with the large amounts of unregulated money in America's campaigns. We hope he will announce the appointment of new commissioners to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Such a move is long overdue. Tune in to the speech tomorrow night and sign our petition asking the President to appoint commissioners to the FEC.
The FEC is supposed to be the government agency that enforces campaign finance laws, but it isn't working and hasn't for a long time. Of the six commissioners at the agency, three of them simply refuse to enforce the law, and five of the six are serving despite the fact that their terms expired some time ago. It is time to clean house and President Obama is the one that needs to do something about it. We need 25,000 supporter signatures by February 10, 2012 so share this post with friends, family and colleagues!
