The United States Senate has canceled its January recess to bring Senators back to Washington to debate and vote on voting rights legislation. This follows months of pressure from the League and other activists to protect the freedom to vote. 

The US Senate must follow suit and pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.

Today, League of Women Voters CEO Virginia Kase Solomón issued the following statement in reaction to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s strategy for bringing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to the Senate floor, bypassing the filibuster rule.

Today, President Biden and Vice President Harris responded to a year of advocacy, including thousands of letters to members of Congress, hundreds of activist arrests, and countless calls to deliver on federal voting rights in a speech in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Today, voting rights groups announced a major expanded effort to drive thousands of calls daily to the White House to urge President Biden to lead on voting rights by urging the Senate to fix or nix the filibuster and pass voting rights protections immediately.

The League calls on members of Congress to enact federal elections protections by supporting the Freedom to Vote Act and other legal remedies as needed. 

Over 200 activists were arrested outside of the White House advocating for President Biden to act on voting rights.
