Avery Emery is a rising 3L at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, where they served as the President of the Public Interest Law Organization and as a founding board member of the Belonging and Access Advisory Board. Their passion for election law began when they read One Person, No Vote by Carol Anderson as an undergraduate student at the University of Utah, where they studied political science and continued to grow as they volunteered for various political campaigns in Utah.

Outside of work, Avery enjoys hiking, particularly in the desert in Southern Utah, and spending time with their cats Sam and Nadja.

This blog examines United States v. Idaho, a federal challenge to the near-total state abortion ban passed in Idaho; it reached the Supreme Court in 2024. We explain the laws at issue, how the case came before the US Supreme Court, and the implications of the Court’s divided decision that sent the case back to the district court.
