LWVUS joined a statement opposing the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) plan to eliminate air quality standards for smog, soot, and mercury, and limits on carbon pollution and coal waste.
JOINT STATEMENT OPPOSING LEE ZELDIN'S POLLUTERS FIRST AGENDA
President Trump and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin have announced their intention to destroy over 50 years of lifesaving progress to protect our air, water, and land. Their plan to eliminate air quality standards for smog, soot, and mercury; carbon pollution limits on power plants and vehicles, and limits on coal waste is a threat to all of us, and a direct assault on the most vulnerable.
Dismantling these protections would endanger the lives of millions and abandon the mission of the EPA, leading to more asthma attacks and cancer, more toxic chemicals poisoning our drinking water and our soil, and more catastrophic extreme weather events like the fires that tore through Los Angeles and the hurricane that washed away entire towns in Appalachia.
Administrator Zeldin and the Trump administration are proposing a plan that will strip away pollution protections at the same time it gives a green light to the greatest increase in pollution in decades. As we get sicker, miss more work days, lose our jobs, and deal with extreme costs, polluting industries would get a free pass. The consequences will be felt by people of color, low-income communities, and those on the frontlines the most.
We fought to advance stronger solutions for pollution over the last four years that protected and improved millions of lives and we are not giving up now. We will stand together now to defend our air and water, our health, our environments, and our right to a livable future.
Sincerely,
