WASHINGTON — The League of Women Voters board president Dr. Deborah Turner issued the following statement on the passing of Senator Bob Dole:
“Bob Dole served his country throughout his lifetime — in the military, in Congress, and as an advocate for people with disabilities.
“The League worked closely with Senator Dole on the Voting Rights Act reauthorization in 1982 and to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. As a candidate for Vice President in 1976, he faced Walter Mondale in the first formal vice presidential debate in American history, hosted by the League of Women Voters.
“Senator Dole will be remembered as an exemplar of statesmanship and public service. May we honor his memory by upholding the voting rights and disability rights that he championed.”
