League of Women Voters Issues Nation-Wide Call for Urgent Action for Equality

Leagues representing 50 states and DC pen letter to White House & Congress to enshrine ERA in the US Constitution

WASHINGTON, DC —  Leading up to Women’s Equality Day, the League of Women Voters of the United States and League chapters from all 50 states and the District of Columbia sent a letter to the White House and members of Congress urging action for the immediate publication of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in the US Constitution. December 2024 marks 101 years since the ERA was first introduced in Congress. 

Tell Your Reps to Support the ERA!

The letter sent on Friday calls for:

  • US President Biden to instruct the US Archivist to fulfill their statutory duty to certify and publish the Equal Rights Amendment in the US Constitution; and
  • US Congress to pass S.J. Res. 4/H.J. Res. 25, a bipartisan resolution affirming the validity of the Equal Rights Amendment as part of the Constitution and addressing the question of a time limit; or
  • US Congress to pass S.J. Res. 39/H.J. Res. 82, a resolution affirming the validity of the Equal Rights Amendment as part of the Constitution and that the US Archivist must certify and publish the ERA.

“We must address the root cause of inequality by amending our Constitution, and it needs to happen now,” said Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters of the US. “It is shameful that over 100 years after some American women gained the right to vote, women continue to battle systematic discrimination. The League has long-fought for passage and ratification of the ERA, and with this letter, we stand committed to our mission to ensure equal rights and equal opportunity for all.”

The League of Women Voters, a 104-year-old nonpartisan voting rights organization, has made it its mission to ensure that every American is represented in our democracy. The grassroots organization, with over 700 local and state League chapters nationwide, has worked for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment for more than 50 years.

The ERA has met all of the ratification requirements outlined in the US Constitution, yet it remains unpublished and many Americans continue to face discrimination on the basis of sex. The League will continue its efforts to support the ERA’s rightful position as a constitutional amendment. Read the letter on our website here.
