The 11th Circuit issued a decision allowing Alabama counties to mandate curbside voting. However, the court failed to waive photo ID requirements for in-person voting and witness requirements for absentee ballots.

LWV of Alabama filed an amicus brief in People First of Alabama v. Merrill, which seeks to ease absentee ballot requirements and mandate curbside voting. The case is now pending in the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Voter Suppression Can Impact Outcomes

"We will appeal to protect the critical rights of voters in these three states, especially during this election year,” said Chris Carson, president of the League of Women Voters U.S.

“If the illegal action is allowed to stand there will be substantial and continuing harm to voters and to our organizations,” said President MacNamara.

The League of Women Voters of the United States, alongside its Alabama, Georgia and Kansas affiliates, filed a federal lawsuit against the executive director of the Election Assistance Commission to prevent these states from requiring documentary proof-of-citizenship when registering voters using the federal mail voter registration form.

“Voters should not have to face an obstacle course to vote. The decision by EAC Executive Director Brian Newby is simply contrary to federal law and we expect it to be overturned,” said President MacNamara.

This year, League volunteers will be out in force in over 25 communities across 15 states as part of our Youth Voter Registration program, with the goal of holding voter registration events in more than 200 high schools and community/vocational schools.

I worked with the Election Protection Hotline to help voters rectify the issues they faced when attempting to vote. This experience showed how far we have to go to have fair elections.
