Reproductive Justice

On Tuesday, May 5, the League's national organizing director, Alma Couverthie, spoke on the steps of the Supreme Court regarding the leaked draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade.

The League of Women Voters and Planned Parenthood rallied in response to an unprecedented leak indicating the supreme court is prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Whole Woman’s Health, a Texas abortion clinic, sued Texas after the state passed a law banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected. The law would be enforced through bounties paid to private citizens who sue recipients of abortion and those aiding and abetting the performance of abortions

In the past year, the League has joined litigation to fight back against the flood of anti-abortion bills that have been put forward across the country.

LWVUS joined an amicus brief in support of plaintiffs in Whole Women's Health v. Jackson, a case before the US Supreme Court challenging a recently enacted Texas law that severely limits abortion services and deputizes private individuals to enforce the law.

This decision is a victory for women and all people in Texas who may become pregnant.

For those who experience pregnancy, our basic freedoms hinge on our ability to make choices about our reproductive health. Our physical and psychological health, ability to gain and maintain employment, financial resources, and even what we can and cannot eat are all dependent on our reproductive choices.

The US Supreme Court declined to rule on a Texas law that bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy LWV of the US Board President Dr. Deborah Ann Turner and LWV of Texas President Grace Chimene issued a joint statement in response.

Several abortion providers in Louisiana sued to strike down state laws that restricted abortion access by requiring them to be staff members with admitting privileges in hospitals no further than 30 miles from their clinic.

We commend the Court on today’s ruling and celebrate that Louisiana will retain the three existing clinics in the state that provide abortion care.
