Protecting the Ballot Initiative Process
Reproductive Freedom for All (RFFA) and partner organizations organized a ballot initiative to amend the Michigan state constitution and guarantee the right to reproductive freedom. The Michigan Board of State Canvassers deadlocked 2-2 on party lines and failed to certify the initiative and place it on the November ballot. The amendment had received substantially more signatures than needed to qualify for the November 2022 ballot. RFFA filed a complaint for relief with the Michigan Supreme Court, asking it to order the Board to place the amendment on the ballot. LWV of Michigan filed an amicus brief supporting RFFA.
Fighting for safe voting options during a pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Alabama voters and voting rights organizations challenged voting laws that required witness signatures and copies of photo identification on absentee ballots and prohibited curbside voting. Plaintiffs sought to prevent enforcement of these requirements and allow curbside voting during the pandemic to protect the health and safety of voters and make voting more accessible. Plaintiffs argued these laws violated the fundamental right to vote under the First and Fourteenth Amendments, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Voting Rights Act.
Protecting Absentee Voting in North Dakota
Burleigh County Auditor Mark Splonskowski filed a federal lawsuit alleging North Dakota state law allowing absentee and mail ballots to be counted if received up to 13 days after Election Day violated federal law, prescribing a single Election Day. LWV of North Dakota intervened to protect voters.
