I’ve been a proud League of Women Voters staffer and a local volunteer since 2006. In my work I’ve had the opportunity to work with hundreds of inspiring League volunteers and seen large-scale voter empowerment efforts come to life.

North Carolina Politicians Target College Students’ Right to Vote

"A total of 5,686 students from 12 school districts and one home school group participated in the Chautauqua County Board of Elections 2012 Mock Presidential Elections. ... 'The League of Women Voters welcomes the Board of Elections' effort to engage students in the political process through a mock election for president. We were happy to have partnered with the Board to make it happen,' said Minda Rae Amiran, League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County's voter service chair."

"Last week, a group of boisterous teenagers marched down to a ballot box a few blocks from their school. The first-time voter contingent and their sign-holding supporters whooped and chanted all the way to the Alameda County Courthouse, eliciting friendly toots from passing cars. ... At Encinal High in Alameda, representatives from the League of Women Voters and the Alameda County Registrar of Voters have come to speak to students about civil rights and the importance of voting, and to register those who are 18 or about to turn 18."

"The Town Clerk's Office has taken on a group of 16- and 17-year-old Brookline teen volunteers to work the polls for the Nov. 6 election. According to a press release sent via the Brookline League of Women Voters, a Brookline High School teacher teamed up with the League to get these teens involved in the political process."

"More than 800 juniors and seniors at Kalamazoo Central, Loy Norrix and Phoenix high schools participated in the process, which was coordinated by the League of Women Voters Kalamazoo Area [MI] and featured actual voting machines and specially prepared ballots that looked like the real thing."

"Bruce Spradlin, seventh-grader at Balboa Middle School, votes Tuesday in the statewide student mock election. The history department, PTA, League of Women Voters and Buena High School Drum Corps, along with community members, joined together to provide the opportunity for students to vote."

"Democracy requires reaching across social divides to develop a sense of community, and women especially need to fight to ensure their voices are heard. ... Those messages were from the opening speakers at the ninth annual Michigan Student Political Issues Convention at Henry Ford Community College on Friday. The event drew hundreds of college and high school students from across the region and numerous regional elected officials to speak and hold caucuses on political topics. HFCC and the League of Women Voters-Dearborn, Dearborn Heights [MI] sponsored the event."

"Archer School for Girls took to Brentwood Village Tuesday to push the "No Vote, Big Voice" campaign in collaboration with the Los Angeles League of Women Voters. ... This fall the school will be one of more than 20 non-profit organizations allied with the L.A. League of Women Voters of Los Angeles, sharing the common goals of educating voters, boosting voter registration and participating in the upcoming presidential election. The campaign is non-partisan."

"The Student Government Association sponsored a “Rock the Vote” initiative this year to get students ready for the upcoming election. SGA has hosted voter registration and debate viewing parties as a part of the initiative. ... The event was cosponsored by the South Orange League of Women Voters [NJ] and the College Republicans. ... According to Kane, who co-chaired the “Rock the Vote” initiative with sophomore Brianna Monti, the League of Women Voters has been a great help to the initiative as cosponsor.
